Description

Ips interpunctatus is a member of the Coleoptera order, specifically within the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. Known as a stem-boring bark beetle, this species plays a significant role in forest ecology as a primary mortality agent for coniferous trees, particularly in boreal and temperate forests.

The primary hosts for this beetle are various species of spruce and fir. These insects target the phloem and cambium layers of the host tree. While they often colonize trees weakened by environmental stressors, large outbreaks can overwhelm healthy stands, leading to widespread mortality across managed and natural forests.

The biological cycle of this pest consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. After mating, females excavate egg galleries under the bark. The larvae then create individual feeding galleries perpendicular to the main tunnel, which effectively girdles the tree and interrupts the transport of water and nutrients, eventually killing the host.

Damage caused by this species is severe and often irreversible. Infested trees show symptoms such as boring dust accumulation at the base, crown discoloration (turning from green to yellow and then reddish-brown), and entrance holes on the bark. Additionally, the beetles introduce blue-stain fungi, which clog the tree's vascular system and further accelerate decline.
