Pear shoot sawfly

The pear shoot sawfly (Janus luteipes) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Cephidae family (Order: Hymenoptera). It is primarily known for damaging young pear shoots, which makes it a significant concern for fruit growers and nursery managers who aim to maintain vigorous tree growth during the critical spring season.

The host plant for this species is almost exclusively the pear tree. The larvae bore into the central pith of succulent, newly developed shoots. This internal feeding pattern disrupts the transport of nutrients and water, ultimately causing the affected shoots to wilt and die back from the tip, which is a classic indicator of the pest's presence.

The biological life cycle of Janus luteipes is synchronized with the phenology of the pear tree. Adult sawflies emerge in the spring. Females use their ovipositor to insert eggs into the soft tissue of the terminal growth. As the larva grows, it tunnels downwards within the shoot, causing the characteristic terminal hook or "shepherd's crook" shape as the plant tissue dries out.

In terms of economic damage, the impact is most severe on young trees, where the destruction of the terminal leader affects the structural integrity and shape of the tree. While mature trees are less susceptible to total loss, repeated infestations can reduce the overall vigor and yield potential of the orchard over time if left unmanaged.

Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Cultural control focuses on the sanitation of the orchard: pruning and destroying infested tips before the larvae finish their development and emerge is the most reliable way to reduce future populations. When necessary, insecticide applications targeting the adult flight period can provide significant control.
