Gall mite Keiferella

Systematic position. The gall mite of the genus Keiferella belongs to the family Eriophyidae, suborder Trombidiformes. These are microscopic arthropods known for their ability to induce abnormal tissue growth in plants, resulting in the formation of galls, which serve as both a food source and a protective shelter.

Affected crops and economic impact. The primary targets include a variety of woody and shrub species, both ornamental and fruit-bearing. By inducing structural changes in leaves and shoots, the mite disrupts essential plant processes such as photosynthesis and transpiration, ultimately causing reduced vigor, premature leaf drop, and stunted growth.

Biology and life cycle. The mite's lifecycle is highly synchronized with the phenology of its host plant. Adult females typically overwinter in protected areas such as bud scales or bark crevices. As soon as plant sap begins to flow in spring, the mites migrate to young, developing tissues to feed, injecting salivary enzymes that trigger gall formation.

Nature of damage. Infestations are characterized by the appearance of various malformations on leaves, such as blisters, fuzzy outgrowths, or pocket-like galls, often shifting in color from green to red or brown. Severe populations can cause significant deformation of young shoots, leading to irregular growth patterns and increased vulnerability to secondary diseases.

Control measures. Managing Keiferella is challenging because the mites are shielded inside the galls, making them less accessible to chemical applications. An integrated pest management (IPM) approach is recommended:

• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches during the growing season to reduce the population.
• Applying acaricides during the early spring, specifically before bud burst, when mites are migrating.
• Using sulfur-based treatments to deter colonization during periods of peak activity.
• Maintaining optimal plant health through balanced fertilization and irrigation to support natural resistance.
