The oak kermes scale (Kermes grandis) is an insect species within the order Hemiptera and the family Kermesidae. This specialized pest is known for infesting oak species, where it spends the majority of its life cycle attached to the bark of branches, feeding directly on the tree's phloem sap.

The primary host plants for this pest are various species of oak (genus Quercus). These insects are often difficult to detect because they closely resemble the buds or small galls of the host tree, allowing them to remain unnoticed until the infestation has reached a significant level.

The life cycle typically involves one generation per year. Fertilized females overwinter on the bark, beginning their rapid development in the spring. As they grow, they take on a spherical, gall-like appearance. By early summer, the females lay eggs under their hardened bodies, which serve as a protective shield for the developing brood.

Damage caused by the oak kermes scale results in the physiological weakening of the host tree. Symptoms include stunted twig growth, branch dieback, and reduced foliage density. The sugary honeydew excreted by these insects promotes the growth of sooty mold, which further interferes with the tree's ability to perform photosynthesis.

Management strategies require a combination of monitoring and intervention. It is crucial to prune and destroy heavily infested branches during the dormant season. Chemical control is most effective when targeted at the crawler stage, using systemic insecticides.
