Description
The oak kermes (Kermes pubescens) is a scale insect belonging to the family Kermesidae. This species specifically targets oak trees, colonizing stems and twigs. It is widely recognized as a serious pest in both forest ecosystems and urban landscaping, where it can severely impact tree health.
The biology of this pest exhibits sexual dimorphism. Adult females are spherical and covered with a distinctive fuzzy pubescence, resembling plant galls. In contrast, males are winged and mobile, playing a crucial role in reproduction by locating sedentary females on the host bark.
Kermes pubescens typically completes one generation per year. The insect overwinters as first-instar nymphs in crevices within the tree bark. As spring temperatures rise, these nymphs emerge to settle on young twigs and buds, where they begin feeding on the plant’s sap.
The primary damage results from direct sap depletion, which significantly weakens the tree. Symptoms include distorted shoots, premature leaf drop, and overall stunted growth. Furthermore, the honeydew secreted by these insects often leads to the development of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and interferes with photosynthesis.
Effective management strategies require a combination of approaches. Systemic insecticides applied during the early crawler stage are highly effective. Additionally, pruning infested branches helps to mechanically reduce the population, and maintaining tree vigor through proper watering and soil fertilization can enhance the tree's natural resistance.
