Description
Oak kermes (Kermes roboris) is a specialized pest belonging to the family Kermesidae (order Hemiptera). These insects are commonly known as scale insects. They are highly specialized parasites that live on the bark of oak trees (Quercus), often appearing as small, spherical, gall-like structures that blend in with the tree bark.
The primary hosts of this insect are various species of oak. By piercing the bark and sapwood, female insects extract vital fluids from the tree. This continuous feeding deprives the host of nutrients and water, which eventually leads to the weakening of the canopy, reduced annual growth, and, in severe cases, the dieback of branches.
The life cycle of the oak kermes involves a single generation per year. Fertilized females overwinter on the bark, growing significantly in size during the spring as they develop eggs within their bodies. In early summer, the females release numerous tiny nymphs, known as crawlers, which disperse across the tree branches to establish new feeding sites.
Beyond direct sap-sucking damage, these insects produce honeydew, a sticky substance that falls onto the leaves and bark. This honeydew serves as a perfect medium for the growth of sooty mold, a dark fungal coating that blocks sunlight from the foliage, thus hindering the photosynthesis process and further stressing the host tree.
Effective management requires a proactive approach aimed at the vulnerable stages of the pest. Recommended strategies include:
- Timed insecticide applications during the crawler emergence period in late spring or early summer.
- Use of horticultural oils or systemic insecticides to control populations on infested trees.
- Promoting tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil care to improve resistance.
- Regular monitoring of bark and branches to detect early signs of infestation.
