The Acuminate scale (Kilifia acuminata) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae (soft scales). The adult females are easily recognized by their distinct, elongated, and pointed body shape, which allows them to mimic the texture and appearance of plant twigs or leaf veins, making them difficult to detect during the early stages of infestation.
This species is a polyphagous pest, meaning it attacks a wide variety of plant hosts. Its primary targets include citrus crops (lemons, oranges), mangoes, avocados, coffee plants, and various ornamental species like Ficus and Laurus. The pest typically congregates on the underside of leaves, particularly along the midrib and primary veins, as well as on succulent stems and leaf stalks.
The biological cycle of Kilifia acuminata is efficient and well-adapted to warm climates. Reproduction often occurs via parthenogenesis, allowing populations to surge rapidly in suitable environments. The crawler stage (first-instar nymph) is the primary dispersal phase; these small insects are highly mobile and can be carried to adjacent plants by wind, animals, or through human activities such as pruning and transportation.
The damage caused by the Acuminate scale is twofold. Primarily, the insects extract sap, leading to stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and leaf drop. Secondly, they excrete large amounts of honeydew. This sticky substance encourages the growth of sooty mold fungus, which covers the leaf surface in a black, powdery layer, severely inhibiting the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis and reducing overall market value.
Effective management and control strategies include:
- Regular field scouting to detect early outbreaks.
- Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce local populations.
- Targeted application of horticultural oils during the vulnerable crawler emergence period.
- Using systemic insecticides for severe infestations in commercial orchards.
- Conserving and introducing natural enemies, such as parasitic wasps and predatory lady beetles.
