Banded hickory borer

The Banded hickory borer (Knulliana cincta) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the Cerambycidae family, order Coleoptera. Native to North America, this insect is recognized as a significant pest of various deciduous trees. Its larvae thrive by boring into the wood, effectively compromising the structural integrity and vascular system of the host tree.

This pest affects a wide range of tree species, with a particular affinity for hickory (Carya), oak (Quercus), walnut, and various citrus trees. The larvae cause damage by excavating galleries within the sapwood and heartwood. While they often target stressed or weakened trees, they are also capable of infesting healthy specimens, leading to canopy thinning and limb breakage.

The biological cycle of this beetle is complex and typically spans one or two years depending on environmental conditions. Adults emerge in the summer to mate and oviposit in bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin tunneling into the tree. They spend the vast majority of their life cycle feeding internally, which makes them inaccessible to many contact insecticides.

The severity of infestation can be determined by observing specific signs:

• Presence of exit holes in the bark of trunks and branches.
• Accumulation of frass (boring dust) at the base of the tree.
• Dieback of twigs and branches that have been structurally weakened by larval tunnels.
• Premature yellowing or shedding of leaves resulting from impaired water and nutrient transport.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Silvicultural practices are essential, focusing on the removal and disposal of heavily infested wood to reduce the beetle population. Systemic insecticides may be used in high-value trees to prevent infestation if applied during the adult flight period. Promoting tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation also helps the host plants resist initial attacks.
