Laccobius

Laccobius is a genus of water scavenger beetles belonging to the family Hydrophilidae within the order Coleoptera. While these beetles are primarily aquatic or semi-aquatic in nature, they can occasionally emerge as pests in intensive agricultural settings, particularly in greenhouses or nurseries where high humidity and waterlogged substrates create ideal breeding conditions.

The biology of Laccobius is characterized by a life cycle consisting of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. These insects thrive in wet environments, typically residing in mud or decomposing organic matter. Their developmental rate is highly influenced by ambient temperature, with higher temperatures often leading to faster population growth and increased activity levels in greenhouse facilities.

In the context of crop damage, these beetles and their larvae can cause harm to sensitive plant stages. When their natural food sources become limited or when greenhouse conditions become favorable for colonization, they may feed on the tender roots, stems, and hypocotyls of young vegetable seedlings. As the beetles feed on the plant tissue, they create entry points for various soil-borne fungi and bacteria. This can result in significant stunted growth, wilting, or even the complete loss of seedlings in high-density production systems, significantly impacting the crop yield.

Effective management of Laccobius relies heavily on cultural practices. Proper irrigation management, improving drainage systems, and maintaining clean growing environments are essential to prevent infestation. In cases where populations exceed economic thresholds, applying specific soil-applied insecticides or disinfectant treatments to substrate systems can effectively reduce beetle numbers and protect the crops.
