Brown click beetle

Systematic position and description: The brown click beetle (Lacon fuliginosus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. This beetle is well-known for its unique ability to flip itself over with a sudden, snapping sound when placed on its back. Adult beetles typically have an elongated, dark brown body, which is covered with short, fine setae, providing camouflage in soil environments.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the brown click beetle progresses through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage, commonly known as a wireworm, is the most destructive phase of this insect. These larvae reside in the soil for several years, feeding on organic matter and plant roots while gradually growing through multiple molting stages before they pupate.

Nature of damage: The larvae of Lacon fuliginosus are notorious for their voracious appetite for underground plant parts. They burrow into seeds, destroying the germ, sever roots of young seedlings, and bore tunnels into tubers and stems. This damage prevents the plant from absorbing nutrients and water effectively, leading to stunted growth or complete death.
