Description

The banded chink shell (Lacuna vincta) is a gastropod mollusk belonging to the Littorinidae family. In the context of marine agriculture, it is recognized as a significant pest that specializes in grazing on kelp and other brown seaweed species, which are commercially important for food and industrial extract production.

The primary hosts of this pest include various species of Laminaria and Fucus. By feeding on the epidermal layers and internal tissues of young fronds, the mollusk significantly reduces the biomass of the seaweed crop, leading to stunted growth and reduced market value of the final product.

Its biological cycle is characterized by the deposition of gelatinous egg masses directly onto the algal substrate. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo a dispersal phase, which allows the species to quickly colonize new seaweed lines within aquaculture facilities, making control difficult once an infestation begins.

The damage caused by Lacuna vincta involves the creation of small, distinct holes or erosion tracks across the surface of the seaweed blades. As these holes coalesce, the structural integrity of the seaweed is compromised, leading to increased breakage during wave action and susceptibility to secondary rot.
