Common periwinkle

Littorina littorea

Description

The common periwinkle (Littorina littorea) is a gastropod mollusk classified within the order Littorinimorpha and the family Littorinidae. While often considered a food source in some coastal cultures, it acts as a significant pest in aquaculture environments by grazing aggressively on commercially valuable seaweed species.

These mollusks primarily damage kelp forests and other farmed macroalgae. By scraping surfaces to feed on epiphytic organisms, they inadvertently destroy the epidermal layers of the host plant. In high-density settings, their grazing activity can result in the complete denudation of young fronds, severely impacting production yields.

The biological cycle involves a planktonic larval stage known as a veliger, which facilitates wide dispersal across coastal regions. After the larval stage, they settle on hard substrates and transition into juveniles. Adults are highly resilient to environmental changes, allowing them to thrive in diverse marine conditions, often outcompeting other species in the habitat.

Damage assessment reveals that periwinkle grazing leads to structural degradation of seaweed thalli, making them susceptible to secondary bacterial and fungal infections. The economic impact is twofold: a reduction in total biomass and a decline in product quality, as scarred or perforated seaweed is unacceptable for direct human consumption or industrial processing.

Effective management strategies in seaweed farming require a proactive approach:

  • Implementation of physical barrier systems around seaweed ropes to prevent mollusk colonization.
  • Manual collection and removal of periwinkles during routine site maintenance.
  • Biological monitoring of population densities to predict and mitigate outbreaks early.
  • Optimization of site selection to areas with high current flow, which hinders larval settlement.
