Littorina

Littorina is a genus of sea snails belonging to the family Littorinidae. While these organisms are primary inhabitants of intertidal zones, their biological activities can negatively affect coastal agricultural systems, particularly those involving halophytic plants or crops grown in low-lying areas susceptible to saltwater intrusion.

The biology of the species involves a complex life cycle beginning with planktonic larvae known as veligers. These larvae are dispersed by water currents, allowing the population to colonize vast areas. Adult snails are highly resilient, capable of surviving for long periods outside of water, which enables them to encroach upon agricultural land during high tide cycles or storm surges.

The economic impact of Littorina is primarily due to their grazing behavior. They feed on vegetation, often consuming young stems and leaves of crops near the water line. This feeding activity not only reduces the photosynthetic area of the plant but also causes physical stress, leading to stunted growth and reduced yields in sensitive plant varieties.

Damages caused by these mollusks include surface scraping and the introduction of fungal pathogens through the wounds created by their radulae. The excessive mucus produced by these snails coats the plants, which interferes with gas exchange and promotes the growth of opportunistic bacterial infections, ultimately compromising the health and quality of the cultivated produce.

Effective management and protection strategies include several key measures:
