Lagocheirus

Lagocheirus is a genus of longhorn beetles (family Cerambycidae) known for their role as serious agricultural pests. These beetles, often found in tropical environments, primarily target the stems and trunks of woody plants. They are characterized by their ability to thrive in stressed tree environments, making them a recurring threat in plantations and orchard settings.

The host range for this genus includes several economically important tropical trees and shrubs, such as papaya, mango, and rubber trees. They are particularly attracted to trees that have existing wounds or lack proper maintenance. By colonizing these plants, the beetles create a microhabitat that can lead to long-term decline if not addressed promptly.

The biology of Lagocheirus follows a typical wood-borer life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs in bark crevices or tree wounds. The larvae, which cause the most significant damage, tunnel deep into the cambium and xylem layers. Once they complete their development, they pupate within the tree and emerge as adults, leaving behind distinct exit holes that serve as an indicator of infestation.

The damage caused by these beetles is primarily internal. As larvae consume the inner bark and cambium, they disrupt the vascular tissues responsible for nutrient and water transport. This results in dieback, branch failure, and significant yield losses. Furthermore, the tunnels weaken the structural integrity of the plant, making it more susceptible to environmental stress and secondary pathogen infections.

Effective management strategies should focus on integrated pest control:

• Strict sanitation protocols, including the removal and destruction of infested wood.
• Maintenance of tree vigor through proper pruning, irrigation, and fertilization.
• Application of targeted insecticides on the bark surface to prevent oviposition.
