Lagocheirus araneiformis is a prominent member of the longhorn beetle family (Cerambycidae), order Coleoptera. This wood-boring pest is widely recognized in tropical and subtropical regions for its significant impact on forestry and various agricultural crop plantations.

The host range of this beetle is diverse, including essential economic crops such as cocoa, coffee, citrus, and various ornamental trees like Ficus. As a xylophagous insect, it specializes in attacking the bark and inner wood of branches and trunks, often targeting trees that are already stressed or wounded.

The biology of Lagocheirus araneiformis involves adults laying eggs in bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the bark and begin feeding on the cambium and xylem. Their boring activity creates extensive galleries within the wood, which disrupts the vascular system of the host plant, severely impeding the flow of water and nutrients.

In terms of damage, the primary harm is structural weakening and the physiological decline of the plant. Infested trees may show signs of dieback, yellowing leaves, and in severe cases, the breakage of major branches or trunk failure. If left unmanaged, the infestation can lead to the rapid decline of entire plantations.

Managing this pest requires a proactive approach centered on sanitation and integrated pest management (IPM). Key strategies include regular monitoring of tree health, prompt removal and destruction of infested wood to disrupt the life cycle, and the application of targeted insecticides during the beetle's peak activity periods to prevent new egg-laying. Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation is also crucial in reducing susceptibility.
