Laimaphelenchus is a genus belonging to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Aphelenchida, and family Aphelenchoididae. These specialized microscopic worms are classified as phytonematodes. Members of this genus are often associated with woody plants and are primarily vectored by wood-boring insects, making them significant subjects for quarantine inspections in forestry and nursery operations.
This pest primarily affects trees and woody shrubs. Infestations are most commonly reported in coniferous species, including various types of pine and spruce. There is also evidence suggesting that certain species within the genus are capable of colonizing deciduous trees, where they penetrate the bark and vascular tissues to feed on cell contents, thereby disrupting the plant's vital physiological processes.
The biology and life cycle of Laimaphelenchus are closely linked to its host and insect vectors. These nematodes inhabit resin canals and the subcortical layers of the tree.
