These microscopic worms are known for their association with woody plants, where they function primarily as mycophagous organisms but can contribute to the decline of host health through direct and indirect pathways.

The primary hosts for this nematode include various coniferous and deciduous tree species. Laimaphelenchus penardi is frequently isolated from the inner bark and wood tissue of trees that have been previously compromised by environmental stress, wood-boring insects, or fungal pathogens.
