Goat Moth

Lamellocossus

Description

Lamellocossus terebra, commonly referred to as a species within the goat moth family (Cossidae), belongs to the order Lepidoptera. This insect is a significant wood-boring pest that poses a persistent threat to woody plants, often operating hidden from plain sight until significant structural damage has already occurred.

The moth targets a wide variety of deciduous tree species. Common hosts include willow, poplar, and alder, as well as a range of pomaceous and stone fruit trees such as apple, pear, cherry, and plum. It is particularly attracted to trees that show signs of environmental stress, poor health, or existing mechanical wounds.

The biology of the species involves a long and complex developmental cycle, usually spanning two to three years. Adults fly during the summer months, and females deposit eggs in bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the cambium and eventually reach deep into the heartwood, where they remain throughout their development.

The damage caused by these pests is severe. Larval feeding galleries disrupt the tree's vascular system, hindering the upward flow of water and nutrients. Visible symptoms include frass (wood dust and excrement) accumulating at the base of the tree or on branches. This internal structural weakening makes trees highly susceptible to windthrow and secondary infections.

Effective management strategies include:

  • Regular inspection of bark for signs of infestation and "frass" accumulation.
  • Mechanical removal of larvae by probing galleries with stiff wire.
  • Sealing entrance holes with specialized horticultural wound dressings or insecticides.
  • Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) to promote overall tree vigor and resistance.
  • Removing and destroying heavily infested trees to prevent the spread to healthy neighboring plants.
