Description

The willow borer (Lamia textor) is a species of longhorn beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae. This insect is primarily known as a wood-boring pest that targets various species of willow and poplar trees, often causing significant structural damage to nursery stock and mature plantations.

The primary hosts of this beetle are plants within the Salicaceae family, specifically the Salix and Populus genera. These trees, often found in riparian zones or commercial plantations, are highly susceptible to infestation, especially if the plants are already under environmental stress or poor soil conditions.

The biological life cycle of Lamia textor is extensive, typically spanning 2 to 4 years. The female beetle lays eggs in the bark near the root collar. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the wood, where they spend the majority of their development stage feeding on the inner bark and sapwood, creating wide, galleries.

Damage caused by the larvae is severe; by feeding on the cambium layer near the roots, they disrupt the plant's nutrient transport system. This can lead to yellowing of the foliage, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the complete collapse of the tree due to secondary fungal infections or wind-throw caused by internal damage.
