Description

The fruit tree snout beetle, scientifically known as Lasiorhynchites pubescens, is a significant pest within the Attelabidae family of beetles. This small, metallic-colored insect is a major concern for fruit growers, as its larvae and adults target the most productive parts of fruit-bearing trees.

The primary hosts of this beetle include apple, pear, and quince trees. It is distributed across many temperate regions, where it finds ideal conditions to thrive in orchards that lack proper sanitation or where pest monitoring programs are not consistently applied throughout the growing season.

The biological cycle of the pest begins as adults overwinter in the soil. As spring temperatures rise, the beetles emerge to feed on developing buds. The female beetle lays eggs in the tissue of leaves or young fruits and creates specific incisions in the stalks, causing the plant material to wilt and eventually drop to the ground.

Damage caused by this insect is quite distinct: it includes perforated fruits, premature fruit drop, and withered shoots. The larvae develop inside the fallen or damaged fruit, significantly reducing the yield. If left untreated, a localized infestation can quickly spread, weakening the tree's overall structure and reducing its productivity for the following year.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Cultural practices such as regular soil cultivation beneath the canopy, the removal of fallen fruit, and the pruning of damaged twigs are fundamental. Chemical interventions using selective insecticides are recommended during the early spring when beetles are most active on the tree canopy.
