Scale insects belonging to the Lecane genus are notable members of the Coccidae family within the order Hemiptera. Unlike armored scales, these insects do not possess a separate, removable shell. Instead, their body wall itself becomes thickened and hardened, serving as a protective shield for the sedentary females as they feed on the host plant's sap.

These pests have a wide host range, frequently infesting fruit trees like apple, pear, and plum, as well as various ornamental shrubs and indoor greenhouse plants. They are particularly attracted to younger, tender stems and the undersides of leaves, where they establish colonies and begin their cycle of sap extraction.

The biology of Lecane species involves a high reproductive rate, with females laying vast quantities of eggs beneath their bodies. The initial nymphal stage, often called a crawler, is the only mobile phase of their life cycle. These crawlers are crucial for population dispersal, as they move across the plant or are carried by wind to neighboring vegetation.

Damage caused by scale insects includes severe chlorosis, stunted growth, and branch dieback. Furthermore, they excrete honeydew, a sticky substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight from reaching the leaves. This combination of nutrient loss and photosynthetic disruption significantly weakens the plant's overall vitality and yield potential.

Effective management strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Cultural practices such as pruning and destroying heavily infested branches are essential to reduce the initial population. Chemical control is most successful during the crawler stage, as they are not yet protected by the hardened scale. Regular monitoring and the application of horticultural oils or systemic insecticides remain the primary methods for ensuring long-term control.
