Lecane lunaris

Lecane lunaris

Description

Lecane lunaris is a species of microscopic invertebrate animals belonging to the phylum Rotifera, class Eurotatoria, order Ploima, and family Lecanidae. While this organism is not a conventional pest for traditional soil-grown crops, it poses a significant threat to hydroponic systems and aquaponics setups.

This micro-organism typically inhabits freshwater environments rich in vegetation, but once introduced into the nutrient solutions of hydroponic systems, it can proliferate rapidly. It damages the tender root tips of seedlings by feeding on organic debris and microscopic biofilms, which hinders plant growth and disrupts the efficiency of nutrient uptake.

The biology of Lecane lunaris is characterized by a rapid life cycle. Under favorable environmental conditions, individuals reproduce parthenogenetically, allowing the colony to reach massive populations in a very short period. They are capable of enduring unfavorable conditions by producing resting eggs, which are highly resistant to standard chemical disinfection treatments.

Damage symptoms typically manifest as browning and the gradual necrosis of root hairs. Due to the physical impact of these rotifers on the root system, plants become increasingly susceptible to secondary infections, such as root rot and pathogenic fungi. Their economic importance is considered high in closed-loop systems where the sterility of the nutrient solution is critical.

Management strategies focus on maintaining water quality and implementing regular equipment sanitation. Effective control methods include:

  • Utilizing UV sterilizers for continuous water treatment.
  • Filtration of the nutrient solution using micro-porous membrane filters.
  • Adjustment of the solution's pH and electrical conductivity (EC) to create unfavorable conditions for rotifer reproduction.
  • Comprehensive sanitary cleaning of all system components between production cycles.
