Description

Walnut scale (Lecanium juglandifex) is a common insect pest belonging to the family Coccidae (soft scales) within the order Hemiptera. These insects are sedentary feeders that attach themselves to the woody parts of their host plants, where they feed on sap, weakening the host tree significantly.

The primary hosts for this pest include walnut trees, oaks, elms, and various fruit-bearing species. The scale insects thrive on young twigs and branches. Because of their protective shield, which blends in with the texture and color of the bark, infestations often go undetected during the early stages of establishment.

The biological cycle of this species consists of a single generation per year. The insect overwinters as a second-instar nymph, typically sheltered within bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, these nymphs resume feeding and mature into adult females. By early summer, each female produces a high volume of eggs beneath her body, which eventually hardens to protect the developing offspring.

The damage caused by the walnut scale is two-fold. First, direct sap removal leads to stunted growth and reduced vigor. Second, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. This dark fungal layer covers the leaves, severely hindering photosynthesis, which leads to premature defoliation and a drastic decline in overall tree health.

Effective management strategies require precision timing and monitoring. Cultural practices include the removal and destruction of heavily infested limbs during the dormant season. Chemical control is most successful when applied during the crawler stage, as the insects are most vulnerable before they develop their protective covers. Utilizing horticultural oils during the dormant period is also a standard industry practice to suppress overwintering populations.
