Soybean pod borer

The soybean pod borer (Leguminivora glycinivorella) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is widely recognized as one of the most damaging insects for leguminous crops, particularly soybeans and peas. Because it resides inside the pods, it presents a challenge for standard pest control practices.

The primary hosts of this pest are various species of the Leguminosae family. The larvae tunnel into the pods and consume the developing seeds. This feeding activity not only results in direct yield loss but also reduces the weight and oil content of the seeds. Consequently, the nutritional and commercial value of the harvested grain is significantly compromised.

The life cycle of the soybean pod borer consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Moths typically emerge and begin oviposition during the pod-setting phase of the host plants. Newly hatched larvae are highly active and promptly bore into the young pods. After completing their feeding, the larvae emerge from the pods, descend into the soil, and construct cocoons where they overwinter as pupae.

The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by internal feeding, where they consume the seed contents, leaving behind frass and webbing. Often, the entry points on the pods are visible as small, sometimes silken-covered holes. Infestations can become severe, leading to substantial damage if the population density remains unchecked during critical stages of pod development.

Management strategies for the soybean pod borer involve the following:

• Implementing crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
• Deep tillage in autumn to destroy overwintering pupae in the soil.
• Selecting early-maturing cultivars to avoid the peak period of pest occurrence.
• Applying insecticides based on pheromone trap monitoring and economic thresholds.
• Using biological control agents where appropriate to suppress population growth.
