Description
Systematic position: The clouded longhorn beetle (Leiopus nebulosus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This small longhorn beetle belongs to the subfamily Lamiinae and is commonly found throughout forests, woodlands, and gardens in Europe.
Host plants: This beetle is a typical wood-boring pest that targets various deciduous tree species. It frequently attacks oaks, hornbeams, and hazelnuts, as well as common fruit trees such as apple, pear, and plum. It is particularly drawn to trees that are stressed, decaying, or have compromised bark layers.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Leiopus nebulosus typically spans one to two years. Adults emerge in the summer, mate, and deposit eggs into crevices of the tree bark. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow beneath the bark to feed on the cambium and phloem layers, creating characteristic galleries that disrupt the tree's internal transport system.
Nature of damage and harmfulness: The larval stage is the most damaging. By mining the subcortical layers, they restrict the flow of nutrients and water, which causes the dieback of branches and limbs. In severe infestations, the cumulative damage can lead to the decline and death of the host tree, especially in young or neglected plantings.
Control measures: Effective management requires both cultural and chemical practices.
