Leptocera caenosa is a species of small fly belonging to the family Sphaeroceridae (lesser dung flies) within the order Diptera. While primarily known as saprophagous insects that thrive on decaying organic matter, their presence in agricultural environments, particularly greenhouses and nurseries, can lead to significant issues when their populations explode in proximity to young or vulnerable plants.

This pest is primarily associated with greenhouse crops, mushroom cultivation, and seedbeds. While their larvae prefer decomposing organic materials, in high-density conditions, they can shift to feeding on the delicate root systems and hypocotyls of young seedlings. This feeding activity frequently results in stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and the collapse of the root system.

The biology of Leptocera caenosa is intrinsically linked to damp, nutrient-rich environments. The life cycle progresses through eggs, three larval instars, puparia, and adults.
