Sphaerocera

Sphaerocera is a genus of flies belonging to the Sphaeroceridae family (lesser dung flies) within the order Diptera. These small insects are commonly found near decaying organic matter, manure, and compost heaps. In an agronomic context, they are categorized as pests that can degrade the quality of agricultural produce and facilitate the spread of various pathogens.

This pest primarily infests vegetable crops stored in high-humidity conditions, as well as mushroom cultures (such as button mushrooms and oyster mushrooms). The larvae are typically found in organic-rich substrates where they feed on decomposing plant tissues; however, during massive outbreaks, they may also damage healthy vegetable tissues and root crops.

The biology of Sphaerocera is closely linked to organic decomposition processes. Its life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults deposit eggs directly into the substrate or onto the surfaces of damaged plant parts. Larval development is rapid at temperatures between 20–25°C, allowing the species to produce multiple generations throughout the growing season.

Damage occurs when larvae tunnel into plant tissues, creating entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal infections. Consequently, the produce undergoes rapid decay, leading to significant weight loss and a decrease in market value. In greenhouse environments, the presence of these flies often signals poor sanitation and hinders routine crop management activities.

Control strategies for Sphaerocera focus primarily on maintaining strict sanitary conditions. Key management practices include:

• Regular disinfection of storage facilities, warehouses, and greenhouses.
• Prompt removal and disposal of rotting plant residues and organic waste.
• Maintaining optimal humidity levels in storage areas and mushroom growing substrates.
• Utilizing sticky traps to monitor and reduce adult fly populations.
• Applying biological pesticides based on entomopathogenic fungi in cases of high population density.
