Description

The rice bug Leptocorisa binotata belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Alydidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of rice crops, primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions where environmental conditions favor its rapid reproduction and survival.

The insect primarily infests crops from the Poaceae family, with a strong preference for cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). It thrives in agricultural ecosystems where alternate grass hosts are present, allowing the population to persist even when the main rice crop is not available.

The life cycle of Leptocorisa binotata consists of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The development is highly synchronized with the growth stages of the rice plant, specifically targeting the grain-filling period which provides the necessary nutrients for the pest's growth.

Damage occurs when adults and nymphs pierce the husks of developing rice grains using their stylets to suck out the milk-stage sap. This feeding behavior leads to the formation of 'pecky rice' or completely unfilled grains, resulting in substantial yield loss and decreased milling quality of the harvested crop.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential for effective control. These include regular field scouting to monitor population levels, maintaining clean fields by removing grassy weeds, and applying chemical insecticides if thresholds are exceeded. It is crucial to use targeted applications to minimize the impact on beneficial insects within the ecosystem.
