Rice bug

The rice bug (Leptocorisa oratorius) is a significant insect pest belonging to the Alydidae family. Known for its slender body and long legs, it is a specialized predator that primarily targets the developing grains of rice plants, causing severe economic losses in agricultural production.

This pest mainly infests rice, but it is also capable of colonizing various other grasses and cereal crops. It is most damaging when it feeds on the milky stage of grain development, causing the grains to become shriveled and empty, which directly impacts yield and grain quality for milling.

The lifecycle of the rice bug follows a hemimetabolous pattern, moving through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females typically lay eggs in clusters on the leaves of host plants. The rate of development is highly sensitive to environmental factors, especially humidity and temperature, allowing for multiple generations per year.

Damage occurs when the insect inserts its piercing-sucking mouthparts into the grain to feed on the nutrient-rich sap. This activity leads to the development of necrotic spots on the grain surface, and in many cases, secondary infections by pathogenic fungi occur, further degrading the harvest value.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Farmers are encouraged to eliminate weeds near rice paddies that serve as alternative hosts. When populations reach economic thresholds, the application of selective insecticides, combined with the use of light traps and pheromone monitoring, remains the standard practice for control.
