Description

Systematic position. The arched longhorn beetle (Leptura arcuata) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. Known as a wood-boring insect, it is a significant species in forest ecosystems and can impact horticultural health depending on the density of the population and tree condition.

Host plants. The pest predominantly targets deciduous trees. Common hosts include species of oak, beech, birch, and various fruit trees. The beetle generally prefers stressed or dying wood, although it can occasionally infest trees that appear healthy if environmental conditions facilitate its proliferation.

Biology and life cycle. This species undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adult beetles are commonly observed feeding on flower nectar and pollen during the summer months. Females oviposit into the bark crevices or injuries of trees. The larvae develop within the wood, creating intricate galleries over a period that may last several years, depending on climate conditions.

Damage and economic impact. The primary economic damage is caused by larval boring activities. By consuming the inner bark and sapwood, larvae disrupt the tree's nutrient transport system. This leads to weakened canopy, branch dieback, and increased susceptibility to fungi and secondary pests. If unchecked, the infestation can result in the loss of ornamental or fruit-bearing value.

Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated approach:

  • removing and destroying dead or heavily infested wood to reduce population density;
  • maintaining high tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation;
  • applying systemic insecticides if necessary during the adult flight period;
  • monitoring bark integrity to detect early infestation signs like entrance holes or frass.
