Spotted longhorn beetle

Leptura maculata

Description

The spotted longhorn beetle, scientifically known as Strangalia maculata (syn. Leptura maculata), is a beetle belonging to the Cerambycidae family. As a wood-boring insect, it is widespread across European and Asian forests, often found in deciduous and mixed woodland environments during the summer months.

While adult beetles are frequently observed on flowers feeding on pollen and nectar, their larval stage is strictly associated with wood. The larvae prefer decaying or stressed timber, targeting a variety of tree species including oak, birch, lime, pine, and spruce, making them a significant factor in the biological degradation of woody biomass.

The biological cycle of the beetle is extensive, often spanning two to three years. The female beetle deposits eggs into bark fissures or damaged sections of trunks and logs. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the timber, creating extensive tunnels filled with frass, which compromises the structural integrity of the wood as they feed and grow.

The economic impact of this beetle is primarily observed in forestry and wood storage. By tunneling into wood, they facilitate the breakdown of structural timber and reduce the value of commercial lumber. Although they prefer dead or dying trees, an outbreak can affect forest health by targeting weakened trees that are already under environmental stress.

To mitigate the impact of this pest, forest and garden management should focus on cultural and sanitation practices:

  • Perform regular sanitary thinning to remove dead and fallen wood.
  • Eliminate old stumps and logging residues that act as breeding sites.
  • Promote forest health to prevent the weakening of trees, which attracts wood-boring pests.
  • Implement monitoring programs to track beetle population density in high-risk areas.
