The Rice leaf roller (Lerodea eufala) is a butterfly species belonging to the Hesperiidae family, order Lepidoptera. While often considered a minor pest in some areas, it can become a significant problem in rice and sorghum crops, particularly in the Americas, where it causes foliage damage that impacts the plant's overall health and development.

Primary hosts for Lerodea eufala include rice, sorghum, corn, and sugarcane. The larvae are generalist feeders on various Poaceae species, allowing them to thrive on field weeds when primary crops are not available. This adaptability makes managing the population challenging throughout the agricultural calendar year.

The life cycle consists of the egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult stages. The female lays eggs individually on host leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae begin feeding on the leaf epidermis and parenchyma. As they grow, they move through several larval instars, exhibiting high consumption rates that correlate with the rapid development of the infestation.

The pest is named for its characteristic behavior of folding or rolling leaves into tubular shelters using silk threads. Within these shelters, the caterpillars feed, protected from natural enemies and many environmental factors. Heavy infestations can lead to significant defoliation, which hampers photosynthesis and ultimately reduces grain weight and crop yield quality.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention. Scouting for larval webs and leaf damage is essential during the vegetative stage. Control strategies include the use of biological insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis, promoting natural predator populations, and maintaining field sanitation by removing grass weeds that serve as alternate hosts for the larvae.
