The white desert snail (Leucochroa candissima) is a gastropod mollusk belonging to the Sphincterochilidae family. It is primarily found in arid and semi-arid environments. Its shell is structurally adapted to reflect sunlight and minimize moisture loss, allowing the species to survive in harsh, hot climates where other snail species would perish.

In agricultural settings, this snail is considered a pest that targets a wide range of vegetables, ornamental plants, and field crops. It is particularly destructive during the early growth stages of plants, where it consumes tender stems and leaves. When environmental conditions improve, such as after rare desert rains, the snail population can surge, leading to widespread crop damage.

The biology of Leucochroa candissima is defined by its ability to undergo long periods of dormancy known as aestivation. During dry spells, the snails seal themselves off from the environment and remain inactive until moisture levels increase. Once triggered by rainfall or irrigation, they emerge to feed voraciously and begin the reproductive cycle.

The damage caused by these snails is both direct and indirect. Direct damage involves feeding on foliage, which stunts plant growth and reduces overall yield. Indirect damage occurs through the accumulation of mucus and excrement, which can attract fungal pathogens and compromise the quality of fresh produce, making it unsuitable for the market.

Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Maintaining field sanitation by removing debris and weeds reduces hiding spots. Barriers such as crushed gravel or ash can deter snails from reaching sensitive plants. For severe infestations, the application of targeted molluscicides is recommended, specifically applying baits in the evening when the snails are most active.
