Description
The coffee leaf miner (Leucoptera caffeina) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Lyonetiidae. This highly specialized pest is a significant threat to coffee plantations, particularly in tropical regions where climatic conditions favor its rapid reproduction throughout the year.
The primary hosts for this insect are plants within the Coffea genus. The larvae penetrate the leaf tissue, feeding on the parenchyma between the epidermal layers. This feeding behavior creates characteristic serpentine or blotch-shaped mines that compromise the plant's structural and metabolic health.
The biological cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Adult females deposit eggs on the surface of the leaves, and upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the leaf tissue. Environmental factors such as temperature and humidity significantly influence the duration of each life stage and the number of generations per season.
The damage caused by the coffee leaf miner is primarily visible as necrotic leaf spots. These mines reduce the total photosynthetic area of the tree, leading to premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and decreased bean production. Heavy infestations can weaken the trees, making them more susceptible to secondary diseases and environmental stressors.
