Description
The Pear leaf blister moth (Leucoptera malifoliella), also known as the apple leaf miner, is a member of the Lyonetiidae family. Although its name suggests a preference for pears, it is a significant pest primarily affecting apple trees, often causing severe economic damage in commercial orchards across Europe and parts of Asia.
The moth targets various fruit trees, particularly those in the Rosaceae family. While apple is the primary host, the larvae are frequently found on pear, cherry, plum, and occasionally hawthorn. This wide range of hosts allows the pest to persist in diverse orchard environments throughout the growing season.
The life cycle typically spans multiple generations per year, depending on regional temperatures. The adult moths are small and inconspicuous. Females lay eggs singly on the underside of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae mine the leaf tissue, feeding on the chlorophyll-rich cells located between the upper and lower epidermis.
Damage is characterized by circular, yellowish or brownish blotch-like mines on the leaves. In cases of heavy infestation, the leaves may curl, wither, and drop prematurely. This premature defoliation significantly impairs the tree’s photosynthetic capacity, affecting fruit size, flavor, and the overall vigor of the tree for the following season.

- Sanitation practices, such as removing and composting fallen leaves where cocoons may overwinter.
