The broad-bodied chaser (Libellula depressa) is a species of dragonfly belonging to the family Libellulidae. While generally considered beneficial predators of agricultural pests such as aphids or flies, their larvae (nymphs) can pose challenges within intensive aquaculture systems and private irrigation ponds due to their predatory habits and environmental impact.
The biological cycle involves an aquatic stage where larvae live in the substrate of stagnant or slow-moving water. This stage can last up to two years, during which they thrive in muddy, vegetated conditions. The adults emerge in spring and summer, utilizing ponds and irrigation reservoirs as primary breeding grounds.
