Systematic position The cinnamon sedge (Limnephilus lunatus) is a species of caddisfly belonging to the order Trichoptera and the family Limnephilidae. Unlike most members of the order that are strictly aquatic, the larvae of this species can cause localized agricultural damage when they inhabit irrigation systems or waterlogged fields adjacent to crop production areas.
Affected crops This pest primarily threatens rice paddies and crops grown in high-moisture or wetland conditions. It can also affect various vegetable crops planted in low-lying, poorly drained fields. The presence of larvae in irrigation channels often leads to damage in surrounding fields due to their transition from aquatic debris to crop materials.
Biology and lifecycle The lifecycle of Limnephilus lunatus comprises four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Larvae are known for constructing portable cases made of organic and inorganic materials. They feed primarily on decaying plant matter but will switch to living crop tissue when natural food sources are depleted or during mass outbreaks in cultivated areas.
