Description
Systematic position. The eastern field wireworm (Limonius agonus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. As a significant soil-dwelling pest, it is recognized for its capacity to inflict economic damage across various agroecosystems, particularly in regions where it finds suitable moisture and food sources.
Crops affected. The larvae of this beetle are generalist feeders known as wireworms. They represent a major threat to a wide range of economically important crops, including potatoes, corn, wheat, oats, and various vegetables such as onions and carrots, attacking roots, seeds, and underground stems.
Biology and life cycle. Limonius agonus typically completes its life cycle over several years, with most of this time spent in the larval stage underground. Eggs are deposited in the soil in late spring. As the larvae grow, they move through the soil profile in response to moisture and temperature gradients, feeding on organic matter and living plant tissue.
Nature of damage and pest status. The damage caused by wireworms is particularly devastating during the early stages of plant growth. They bore into tubers and roots, creating tunnels that weaken the plant, stunt its development, and increase susceptibility to secondary rot-causing pathogens, which often leads to poor harvest quality and marketability.
