Description
The Schefflera thrips (Liothrips heptapleuri) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Phlaeothripidae. It is a specialized pest that primarily targets plants within the Schefflera genus, often causing significant damage to ornamental indoor crops in greenhouse environments.
These insects thrive in warm and stable indoor climates. Because they prefer the sheltered environments of decorative plant collections, infestations can spread rapidly if they are not detected during the early stages of the population buildup.
The life cycle of the thrips includes several stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. The adults are characteristically dark-colored, which allows them to blend in with the dark green foliage of their host plants, making visual inspection difficult for the grower.
Damage occurs when the thrips pierce the plant tissue to suck out cellular contents. This leads to characteristic symptoms such as stunted growth, curled and deformed leaves, and the presence of pale or necrotic patches on the leaves. Severe infestations often result in leaf drop and reduced plant vigor.
