Olive thrips

The olive thrips (Liothrips oleae) is an insect belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Phlaeothripidae. It is a major pest in olive-growing regions worldwide, capable of causing economic damage by significantly reducing the quantity and quality of olive production.

The primary host plant for Liothrips oleae is the olive tree (Olea europaea). The pest prefers young, tender leaves, succulent shoots, and inflorescences. During severe infestations, both larvae and adults can be found covering significant portions of the foliage, directly impacting the tree's vitality.

The biological cycle of this pest is highly dependent on climate. Adults typically hibernate in bark crevices or protected plant parts. In spring, they emerge to lay eggs on new growth. Depending on the temperature, the species can complete several generations per year, with populations peaking during the warmer months.

The damage caused by these insects includes leaf curling, distortion, and localized necrosis. As they feed, they pierce the plant tissue to suck cell sap, leading to stunted shoot growth and premature leaf drop. Furthermore, the presence of these thrips often promotes the development of sooty mold, which impairs the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively.
