Pistachio thrips

Pistachio thrips (Liothrips pistaciae) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Phlaeothripidae. This tiny, tube-tailed thrips is highly host-specific, causing localized but severe economic damage to pistachio orchards throughout various Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions.

The primary hosts for this species are trees of the genus Pistacia, particularly Pistacia vera. The pest is particularly aggressive in orchards where climatic conditions favor rapid population growth, typically in hot and dry environments that coincide with the active vegetative growth phase of the trees.

The life cycle of Liothrips pistaciae involves egg, larva, prepupa, pupa, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs primarily as adults, which seek refuge in bark crevices or under leaf litter. As temperatures rise in spring, these adults emerge to feed on budding leaves, subsequently laying eggs that trigger a series of generations throughout the growing season.

Damage is characterized by feeding on the sap of young tissues. The thrips' activities cause distinct leaf curling, distortion, and yellowing, often leading to necrosis of the foliage. Heavy infestations result in reduced tree vigor, premature leaf drop, and a significant decline in both current and future nut yields due to diminished photosynthetic capacity.

Effective management strategies require a multi-faceted approach to limit the impact of the pest.

• Orchard hygiene, including the removal of dead wood and pruning of infested twigs where larvae may pupate.
