Taxonomic classification. Liothrips varicornis belongs to the order Thysanoptera, family Phlaeothripidae. These insects are known for their slender bodies and piercing-sucking mouthparts, which allow them to feed efficiently on plant tissues, causing localized cell death and overall vigor decline in infested specimens.

Host plants and damage. This pest primarily targets species within the Spiraea genus. By feeding on the sap of tender leaves and shoots, the thrips disrupt the plant's metabolic functions, leading to reduced chlorophyll content and compromised growth. It is considered a significant pest in ornamental horticulture settings where plant aesthetics are paramount.

Biology and lifecycle. The development of Liothrips varicornis passes through egg, larval, prepupal, pupal, and adult stages. The insect's population dynamics are strongly influenced by ambient temperature and humidity. Overwintering typically occurs in the adult stage within protected microhabitats, such as bark crevices or leaf litter, ensuring survival during colder months.

Symptoms of infestation. Visible damage includes chlorotic spots, silvery streaks, and necrotic lesions on the foliage. Heavy infestations lead to severe curling and deformation of leaves, which can result in premature leaf drop. These symptoms not only reduce the aesthetic value but also weaken the plant, making it more susceptible to secondary pathogens and environmental stress.
