These flies are widely recognized in agricultural entomology for their specialized feeding habits, where the larvae live as internal leaf parasites. The primary hosts for this leafminer are plants within the Zygophyllaceae family, specifically those belonging to the genus Bulnesia. While this insect typically exists in natural habitats, it can become a pest in botanical gardens or nurseries that cultivate these specific species, leading to aesthetic and physiological degradation of the plant material.
The biological cycle involves metamorphosis from egg to adult through larval stages that occur exclusively inside the leaf. Female flies pierce the leaf surface to lay eggs, and upon hatching, larvae consume the leaf's internal tissue. Depending on ambient temperatures, the development process can be very rapid, allowing for multiple overlapping generations within a single season.
