Description
The European grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is considered one of the most destructive pests in viticulture worldwide, affecting grape production in various climatic zones across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
The pest primarily targets grapevines (Vitis vinifera). The larvae feed on the reproductive parts of the plant, starting with the floral buds and inflorescences. As the grapes develop, the larvae tunnel into the berries, causing significant tissue damage and exposing the fruit to secondary fungal pathogens.
The biology of Lobesia botrana involves multiple generations per year, usually two to four depending on the regional climate. They overwinter as pupae within protected silk cocoons located under bark, in cracks of trellis posts, or in debris on the ground. Adult moths emerge in spring when temperatures rise.
The economic impact of this pest is severe. Beyond the direct consumption of grape tissue, the feeding process creates entry points for Botrytis cinerea (gray mold). This combination often leads to extensive rot in the clusters, significantly reducing yields and impacting the quality of the harvested fruit.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. This includes monitoring adult flight using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications accurately. Growers often utilize biological control, mating disruption techniques, and selective insecticides that target larvae during the vulnerable early developmental stages.
