Description
The tricolored munia (lat. Lonchura malacca) is a small bird belonging to the estrildid finch family, order Passeriformes. While often kept as an ornamental bird, in parts of South and Southeast Asia, this species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest capable of causing substantial economic damage to various grain crops.
The primary food source for this species consists of seeds from cultivated grasses. The most severe damage occurs in rice (Oryza sativa) fields, specifically from the milk-ripe stage until the grain reaches full maturity. In addition to rice, these birds frequently feed on millet, sorghum, and various weeds, often invading farmlands in large numbers.
The biology of this species is characterized by high social activity and large flock formations. They construct spherical nests made of plant fibers in reed beds or on tree branches. With a high reproductive rate and the ability to produce several clutches of 4–6 eggs per season, populations can grow rapidly, creating intense feeding pressure on agricultural systems.
Damage occurs primarily through the consumption of grains directly from the panicles. A single flock can strip rice stalks of their grains within a few days. Furthermore, the weight of the birds perching on the stalks causes the plants to bend or break, leading to crop lodging. This, in turn, makes the remaining grains vulnerable to soil-borne pathogens and fungal diseases.
Management strategies for the tricolored munia include various deterrence methods. Commonly employed techniques include the use of scarecrows, reflective materials, and acoustic deterrents to protect vulnerable fields. In high-risk areas, physical exclusion via netting is the most effective solution, complemented by the monitoring and reduction of nesting habitats near agricultural lands.
