Java sparrow

The Java sparrow (Lonchura oryzivora) is a species within the Estrildidae family of the order Passeriformes. While widely known as a popular cage bird, it is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in its native Southeast Asian range, where it poses a constant threat to cereal production, particularly rice crops.

This bird species is predominantly granivorous, focusing its foraging efforts on ripening rice plants. When flocks descend upon cultivated land, they consume the grains directly from the stalks during the milk and dough development stages. Furthermore, they may damage other cereals and horticultural crops if their nesting sites are adjacent to farmland.

The biology of Lonchura oryzivora is characterized by highly gregarious behavior. The formation of large, cohesive flocks allows them to exploit food resources efficiently and move between fields with devastating speed. Their nesting habits, often involving cavities in man-made structures, allow them to maintain high population densities even in areas heavily modified by human agricultural activity.

The damage caused by these birds is significant and often catastrophic for local farmers. By stripping the grains from the panicles, they significantly reduce the yield per hectare. In addition to direct consumption, the feeding activity often results in stems being bent or broken, which renders the damaged plants more susceptible to pathogens and mold, further complicating the harvest process.
