Scaly-breasted munia

The scaly-breasted munia (Lonchura punctulata) belongs to the order Passeriformes and the family Estrildidae. In various agricultural regions, this bird is classified as a significant pest known for causing localized but severe damage to cereal crops, particularly rice.

The primary crops affected by this species are rice (Oryza sativa), millet, and sorghum. During the grain-filling stage, large flocks descend upon fields, potentially destroying a substantial portion of the expected yield within a very short timeframe if left unmanaged.

The biology of the scaly-breasted munia is characterized by gregarious behavior, with flocks ranging from dozens to hundreds of individuals. They exhibit high adaptability to human-altered landscapes, often nesting in close proximity to cultivated fields. Their breeding season is frequently synchronized with the peak grain harvest times.

The nature of the damage involves the birds consuming grains directly from the panicles while they are in the milk or dough stage. In addition to direct consumption, their activity causes mechanical damage to the stalks and panicles, leading to grain shattering and secondary losses due to the presence of droppings that contaminate the crop.

Protection strategies involve integrated pest management. Mechanical methods such as reflective ribbons, avian distress calls, and protective netting are commonly used. Agronomic practices include coordinating planting times to avoid peak bird migration or presence and minimizing dense nesting cover, such as weeds or hedges, around the perimeter of agricultural plots.
