Lorita

Lorita (scientific name Lorita scarificata) is a moth species belonging to the family Tortricidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest primarily affecting avocado orchards. This moth is particularly noted for the cryptic behavior of its larvae, which complicates early detection and control efforts in commercial farming operations.

The primary host for this species is the avocado tree (Persea americana). The larvae feed on various parts of the tree, with a marked preference for young fruit. This focus on the reproductive organs of the plant makes the pest particularly damaging, as it directly attacks the marketable part of the crop, impacting both yield quantity and quality.

The life cycle of Lorita follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs on the surface of young fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the epidermal layer of the fruit skin. This mining behavior provides the larvae with constant access to nutrients while shielding them from many predators and environmental stressors.

The economic impact of Lorita is primarily due to the physical damage caused to the skin of the avocado fruit. As the larvae feed, they create irregular, necrotic scars and shallow tunnels. These lesions not only ruin the appearance of the fruit but also facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, which can cause fruit rot during storage and transit.

Management of this pest relies on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices. Key strategies include visual inspections to identify early-stage damage and the use of pheromone-baited traps to monitor adult moth activity. Biological control using naturally occurring parasitoids or selective microbial insecticides is often preferred. Targeted chemical treatments may be necessary during peak larval activity periods to prevent economic loss.
