Description
The mites of the genus Lorryia belong to the family Tydeidae (order Trombidiformes). These are tiny, often microscopic arthropods found across various agricultural and natural ecosystems. While some members of this family are recognized as predators or scavengers, species within the Lorryia genus are known to colonize plant surfaces and feed on plant tissues.
This pest infests a wide range of crops, including fruit trees such as apple, pear, and citrus, as well as grapevines and various ornamentals. They typically congregate on the underside of leaves and near leaf veins, where they find protection and access to plant fluids, often forming dense colonies.
The biological cycle of Lorryia is characterized by rapid development through several life stages, including egg, larva, and multiple nymphal instars. They are particularly active during the growing season when environmental conditions, such as moderate temperatures and high humidity, provide the perfect climate for population explosions.
The damage caused by these mites includes the yellowing of leaves, stippling (small chlorotic spots), and the overall loss of leaf vitality. Severe infestations disrupt photosynthesis, leading to stunted growth, early leaf senescence, and reduced fruit quality. Additionally, their feeding activity can create favorable conditions for the growth of sooty mold.
