Description

The mite Lorryia formosa belongs to the Tydeidae family within the Trombidiformes order. While many members of this family are recognized as predators or scavengers, Lorryia formosa is a significant agricultural pest that causes substantial economic losses in citrus orchards and nursery environments globally.

The primary hosts for this mite are citrus species, including oranges, lemons, and mandarins. The pest prefers to colonize the underside of leaves, where they establish colonies and feed on the plant tissues, leading to localized cellular disruption. Apart from citrus, they may occasionally inhabit other ornamental woody species.

The life cycle of Lorryia formosa follows a typical acari development pattern, including the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Favorable conditions, such as high humidity and warm temperatures, significantly accelerate their reproductive rate, allowing for multiple generations throughout the growing season.

The damage caused by this mite is characterized by necrotic spotting on the foliage, which can be easily confused with fungal infections or nutrient deficiencies. Feeding causes the epidermis of the leaf to break down, resulting in yellowish or brownish lesions. Severe infestations lead to leaf senescence and defoliation, severely reducing tree vigor.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for control. Key strategies include:

  • Regular scouting to assess population density;
  • Application of selective acaricides when thresholds are exceeded;
  • Conservation of native predatory mites that act as biological control agents;
  • Pruning to improve orchard ventilation and minimize favorable conditions for mite nesting.
